As enemies invade their towns, the remaining inhabitants face starvation and violence. A retired soldier and his family take refuge in an old cavalry fort, where they are joined by a village headman and a brewer with his daughter. Together, they must navigate the harsh realities of survival and forge a new community amidst the chaos.
