The twin Spanish Peaks in southern Colorado, towering at 13,623 feet, have historically attracted diverse groups, from Native Americans to Spanish explorers seeking gold. The peaks served as a landmark for migrants on the Santa Fe Trail and later drew settlers during the coal mining boom in the 1870s. Presently, the surrounding towns of Walsenburg, La Veta, and Cuchara offer stunning mountain vistas and a variety of year-round recreational opportunities for visitors.
