Set against the backdrop of a small Scottish mining village during the 1984 coal miner's strike, the story follows thirteen-year-old Alex Watts and his friend Jim Hood as they seek adventure sledding on a hill. Their evening takes an unexpected turn when a spacecraft, carrying a vital message about an impending alien invasion, crash-lands nearby. Instead of delivering its warning to world leaders, the alien messenger encounters the boys, setting off a chain of events that will dramatically alter their lives and the fate of Earth.
