The story follows Alec Maitland, who, after a challenging time abroad, returns to London and unexpectedly reconnects with Charles Biddulph, a government official. Biddulph recruits Maitland for a covert mission to investigate unsettling events threatening a British Crown Colony in Africa. Initially excited, Maitland quickly realizes the assignment is fraught with peril as it transitions from London to the treacherous Scottish grouse moors, revealing the complexities and dangers of espionage.
