Set against the backdrop of World War Two, the story follows Dante Rinaldi, the son of Italian immigrants in Scotland. While spending a summer in Italy with his grandfather, he connects deeply with his family's rural heritage. As he matures, Dante becomes involved with a group of mountain partisans, aligning himself with their fight against fascism, highlighting themes of identity, heritage, and resistance.
