Set in the struggling fishing community of Deeper Harbour, the story follows fourteen-year-old Roland MacTavish as he faces his parents' separation and his mother's decision to move to Ottawa. While his mother sees no future in their hometown, Roland is determined to stay connected to his father and his eccentric friends, especially his grandfather Angus. In a bid to change his fate, he concocts an elaborate scheme involving a sea monster, blending humor and adventure as he seeks to save his home and relationships.
