The story follows Bill Argus, a former photographer seeking redemption after abandoning his family and their dairy farm decades earlier. At sixty-three, he returns to his hometown in Sonoma County, only to find it drastically changed and his family unresponsive to his presence. The narrative explores themes of guilt, forgiveness, and the passage of time as Bill confronts the consequences of his past decisions in a town that has moved on without him.
