Notable for its literary realism and bold themes, the work challenged contemporary norms, prompting publishers to hesitate due to its content. Stephen Crane, at just 22, self-financed its initial release under a pseudonym. Following the acclaim of his later work, the novella was revised and reissued in 1896, and it is accompanied by the story "George's Mother."
