Ernest William Hornung, born in 1866, is best known for creating A. J. Raffles, the charming 'gentleman thief,' first introduced in 1898. His time in Australia significantly influenced his writing. Besides novels, he crafted stage plays and poetry, showcasing his diverse talents. Hornung's experiences during WWI led to the poignant publication of "Notes of a Camp-Follower on the Western Front," reflecting on his time with troops and the personal tragedy of losing his son at the Second Battle of Ypres. He passed away in France in 1921.
