The story follows 15-year-old au pair Lily McGee, who faces the challenges of protecting nine-year-old Michael Cook from his abusive, alcoholic mother during their summer at a beach resort. After a traumatic encounter with Mrs. Cook, Lily takes Michael to the beach, where they venture beneath the boardwalk shrouded in fog. This dark, mysterious setting becomes a backdrop for a lurking entity that threatens to take Michael, heightening the tension as Lily struggles to safeguard him from both his mother and the dangers that lie hidden in the shadows.
