Set against the backdrop of Prohibition in 1928, the narrative follows Lou Browning, whose report of a hidden still triggers a tragic chain of events, resulting in her sister's death and threats to her family. The Browning family, marginalized and reliant on the goodwill of neighbors, faces escalating tensions in a struggling rural community. After Lou's grandchildren are taken away, her misguided accusations lead to a raid on a local still, culminating in a devastating fire and the infamous Browningtown Massacre, followed by a trial of the accused.
