Set during WWII, the story follows the unlikely friendship between Erich, a young German POW opposed to Nazism, and Max, a twelve-year-old boy from German immigrant parents. Their bond forms when Erich is assigned to a Canadian logging camp near Max's hometown. However, their friendship is threatened by a saboteur targeting the camp and rising anti-German sentiment in the community, putting both boys at risk as they navigate the challenges of loyalty and prejudice.
