Set in 1784 before the French Revolution, the story unfolds with a confrontation sparked by Paul Déroulède's insult to the young Vicomte de Marny regarding his romantic interest, Adèle de Monterchéri. Although Déroulède initially seeks to avoid conflict, his tendency to attract trouble leads to a duel instigated by the Duc d'Orléans. The Vicomte, despite his noble lineage, faces a tragic fate at the hands of Désiré Dénouez-Drouot, who disarms and kills him, highlighting the themes of honor, pride, and the consequences of social standing.
