The Black Dwarf and A Legend of Montrose

Set in the early 18th century, the story follows Sir Edward Mauley, a dwarf who becomes a recluse after a tragic betrayal by his friend Richard Vere. While living incognito as Elshender the Recluse, he is perceived as a supernatural figure due to his strength and medical knowledge. The narrative intertwines Mauley's fate with that of Vere's daughter, Isabella, who seeks his help against her father's oppressive plans. As Mauley intervenes to prevent Isabella's unwanted marriage, he ultimately reveals his identity and fortune, leaving behind a lingering mystery about his fate.
