Set in the gossipy seaside town of Taviscombe, the story follows widow Sheila Malory, a keen observer of character and adept at solving mysteries. Her skills are put to the test when she discovers the poisoned body of her friend, Miss Graham, whose death conveniently benefits a questionable local doctor. As Malory delves deeper, she uncovers connections between Miss Graham's substantial fortune and another suspicious death during a fireworks display, leading her to question whether the two murders are linked.
