The Great Sand Dunes in Southern Colorado, towering at 750 feet, are the highest dunes in the U.S. not near a body of water. Established as a national monument in 1932 and a national park in 2000, these dunes have a rich history, from prehistoric hunter-gatherers to the Ute Indian tribe. Zebulon Pike was the first American to explore the area in 1807, paving the way for future explorers, ranchers, and miners. Today, the park attracts visitors eager to experience its unique landscape through climbing and sliding down the dunes.
