Set in the Allegheny Mountains, the story follows Jimmy Warren, a farm boy who discovers wolf tracks in the snow, suggesting the return of a long-lost species. Guided by Hawk, an old storyteller, Jimmy's passion for nature deepens as he navigates his feelings for Sherry Woolman, a girl who shares his love for the wild. To protect the wolf, he fictionalizes his journal entries, but faces challenges from the Tanner brothers, who threaten the delicate balance of nature he has come to cherish.
