The development of a statistical graphics package began with a seminar on quantitative graphics, leading to the creation of SYSTAT in the 1980s. Initially designed to encompass a wide range of statistical visuals, the program evolved in the 1990s to utilize object-based technology, enhancing its functionality and reducing code size. A collaboration in the late 1990s resulted in the Graphics Production Library (GPL) in Java, aimed at creating graphics components. This book reflects the insights and advancements from that project, showcasing the evolution of statistical graphics programming.
