Set against the backdrop of rising tensions before World War II, the story follows Kay Jeynes, a young working-class woman who forms an unlikely friendship with Mr. Miyashita, an elderly Japanese businessman. As war approaches and travel restrictions tighten, Kay embarks on a perilous journey to retrieve a family heirloom for Mr. Miyashita. Her minor deceptions, born from a desire to protect him, inadvertently place him in danger of being accused as a spy, highlighting themes of loyalty and the impact of societal fears.
