The story follows William Rees, a former Revolutionary War soldier, who, after the death of his wife, abandoned his son David to lead a lonely life as a traveling weaver. Upon returning to his Maine farm, he finds that David has been mistreated and has escaped to join the Shakers, a secluded religious community. This journey of discovery reveals themes of loss, redemption, and the search for belonging as Rees confronts his past and the consequences of his choices.
