This book is based on interviews conducted by the author with Cudjo Lewis, the last known survivor of the Atlantic slave trade. Cudjo Lewis was brought to America on the slave ship Clotilda in 1860 and was enslaved for five years before the end of the Civil War. The book provides a firsthand account of the horrors of slavery and is an important work of African-American literature.
