The Keeper of Things focuses on the psychological strain of the conditions felt by our brave and relentless military soldiers. Written in the first person from the perspective of Issy Bauer, Issy foretells the story of her twin, Eric, who returns home from Afghanistan unable to cope with civilian life. Having sustained physical injury, human loss, and psychological strain, Eric seeks to relieve himself from his tormenting thoughts by any means necessary. However, those stresses not only affect him but also the people around him, more specifically his twin. While Eric receives aid in an Ottawa facility geared to war veterans, Issy's own life continues to spiral out of control. As a backdrop to Issy's tale, there is the story of David Bauer, the twins' father, as told from his perspective. Set in Port Credit, Ontario, the story flips from present to past as Issy grows closer to discovering a dark secret in her father's own turbulent past. This story is a psychological analysis that, although fictional, is felt by numerous families around the globe. Issy's story relates to any of us who have ever witnessed a loved one suffer through the strains of war, and for those who continue to fight that battle abroad and at home.
