The otter twins, Jaxon and Lukas, are living through a hot, dry autumn. A dry lightning storm starts a wildland fire. Together with their parents and the Badger family, they try to escape the fire. The badgers can't keep up. While they pause, a burning tree falls, separating Mr and Mrs Badger from their younger daughter, Camila, and the otters. Camila grabs Lukas's magic stick, and uses magic to protect her parents from the fire. They leap to rejoin the others and everyone escapes to the Beaver Family's pond. There, the dammed river has flooded the forest and it's too wet for the fire to catch. They find a safe place to rest. The otter twins meet the raccoon who gave them their magic stick and rock years ago. Lukas confesses that his stick got left behind in the fire and burned up. Jaxon confesses that he traded his rock to a sea otter for a crystal. The raccoon forgives them and uses the crystal to make a protective magic shield that keeps out the smoke. Everyone is able to sleep. In the morning, the otter twins find that the raccoon has gone, but left the crystal with Camila. The otter twins decide that she can keep it.
