This study examines the extent and impact of foreign direct investment in a host of countries. On the fortieth anniversary of its original publica tion, the author has updated the original text, adding a new introduction and concluding chapter to put the work into a contemporary perspective. It seeks to compare and contrast the extent, pattern and impact of US MNE activity in the UK in the mid-1990s with that of the 1950s and also trace the landmark of changes which have occurred in the intervening years, including; European Union; new technology; and the growth of non-US and Japanese FDI.
