When you're a fifth grader who has a not so normal life, it's hard to pretend that everything is okay. Jack works hard to hide the truth, tucking it away so he doesn't have to think about it. That seems to work, at least for a while. When others find out his secret, Jack relies on the kindness and support of his little buddy, his best friend, his soft-hearted principal, and a very unusual woman to help him through a very difficult situation. He learns how it feels to depend on someone and to have someone depend on you.
