Bento, his wife Janaina, and their daughter Aurea flee Brazil to escape the drug bosses Bento worked for, seeking a fresh start in the United States. While Aurea is initially confused about leaving, she finds happiness in Cincinnati, enjoying school, the library, and weekends at Riverfront Park. However, everything changes when her parents leave her on the porch of a home in Hyde Park, entrusting her to a woman named Alex with an envelope. Alex takes Aurea in, introducing her to Mary, who helps with school. Despite the kindness, Aurea senses a difference in how her teachers treat her. As Alex investigates the disappearance of Aurea's parents, she uncovers a Brazilian drug connection, suspecting that Bento took drug money to flee and that a collector is after them. After two weeks of uncertainty, Aurea fears being placed in the Child Welfare System. Alex identifies the collector and devises a plan to reach Brazil to arrest him for murder. Once she has Aurea's parents' bodies, she aims to secure the grandmother's signature for adoption. Alex and her partner Matt express their desire to adopt Aurea, who grapples with the reality of a grandmother in Brazil who may not want her. Alex reassures her with adoption papers, emphasizing that she is loved and wanted.
