India, 1948. Margaret Wood and Rodney Savage are reunited, a year on from their first meeting on Independence Day. Margaret is a missionary and a nurse who came to India with her husband. But he has died of a terrible fever, and that has left her, questioning her faith and devotion, to carry out the mission alone. Savage, who has known, lived and fought in India for years, is bewildered by a country he no longer recognizes, and, now rootless, he struggles to find his place in it.
