An intimate and poignant memoir about the family of Alan Kurdi, the young Syrian boy who became a symbol of the plight of millions of Syrian refugees. Alan's body washed up on the Mediterranean shore on September 2, 2015, awakening the world to the Syrian refugee crisis. Tima Kurdi first saw the shocking photo of her nephew in Vancouver but had already been living the harsh reality. She recounts her idyllic childhood in Syria with her brother Abdullah and siblings in a close-knit family. A strong-willed woman, Tima pursued her dream of becoming a hairdresser and emigrated to Canada at twenty-two, leaving much of her family behind in Damascus. Life as a single mother in a new country was challenging, and she shares the heart-wrenching struggle of balancing her new life with the world she left behind. As war engulfed her homeland, her family risked everything to flee, and Tima worked tirelessly to help them find safety. Despite setbacks from politics and violence, the Kurdis never lost hope. When tragedy struck, Tima found herself advocating for refugees, giving voice to those who couldn’t speak for themselves.
