Steinbeck wrote east of Eden in 1961. It was to be his longest and most ambitious novel. It took 10 months in the writing and he would warm up for his daily stand by pencilling a letter to his editor and friend Pascal Covici. East of Eden letters were never intended for publication. They provided insight into the mind and art of a great writer – here's every day hopes and fears, the small worries and deep convictions.
