On May 17, 2022, Valeriya "Nava" Subotina was captured by Russian forces and held for 86 days during the Ukrainian military's defense of Mariupol and the Azovstal plant. To save lives, the defenders were ordered to surrender under the promise of "honorable captivity" and an exchange within 3-4 months. Valeriya, part of the "Azov" regiment's press service, endured over 11 months in captivity, first in Olenivka and then in Taganrog prison. In her account, she reveals the harrowing experiences she faced, including constant surveillance, humiliation, and inhumane living conditions marked by severe food and water shortages. The enemy sought to break her spirit through physical and psychological intimidation, aiming to force her into treason. Exhausting interrogations and torture compounded her suffering, while the lack of communication with loved ones and enemy propaganda eroded her hope for freedom. Despite these challenges, Valeriya remained resilient, emerging as a witness to the crimes committed by the Russian Federation. Her story is a testament to her courage and the brutal realities of captivity.
