Dahl je mistrem černého humoru a jeho povídky jsou až rafinovaně promyšlené a gradované k někdy dost tvrdé, ale vždy překvapivé pointě. Nejsou to však příběhy morbidní ani krvežíznivé. Dahl sice pracuje s nadsázkou, ale vyznění jeho povídek je hluboce chápavé, humanistické. Jeho anekdotické příběhy vyrůstají ze zcela všedních a pravděpodobných situací a jejich nositeli jsou dokonale prokreslené postavy z běžného života.
