Dem für seine volkstümlichen Erzählungen bekannten belgischen Schriftsteller Charles de Coster gelang mit seiner Übertragung der Abenteuer Till Eulenspiegels in die Zeit des Achtzigjährigen Krieges (1568-1648) ein literarisches Werk, das den Bildern der großen flämischen Maler in nichts nachsteht. Mit seiner Erzählung, die den Freiheitskampf der Flamen gegen die spanische Unterdrückung thematisiert, schuf de Coster als erster Belgier ein nationales Opus in französischer Sprache und begründete damit die moderne französischsprachige Literatur Belgiens.

Přestože se román klasika belgické literatury Charlese De Coster jmenuje Svatební cesta, autor se v úvodním věnování přiznává, že by jej radějinazval Tchyně. Vypráví o překážkách, jež soužití dvou mladých lidí klade do cesty tchyně, „jedna z oněch zlých egoistek, které z ženy mají jen její chyby a které patří k žárlivým, bláhovým, zlomyslným a pitvorným stvořením“. Mistrně vyprávěné drama přerodu sobecké mateřské lásky v nenávist k vlastní dceři, která se v manželství matce odcizila. Významný brazilský klasik Aluísio Azevedo navozuje v prvé kapitole románu Tchyně obvyklou atmosféru svárů, kterou v mladém manželství působí tchyně, avšak v podstatě jde o úvod ke svérázné teorii manželství a lásky, již v podobě rukopisu odkazuje matka své dceři, když se matka stává tchyní. Tato žena, jejíž manželství ztroskotalo, a to nikoli pro nevěrnost jednoho či druhého partnera, radí, aby si každý z obou partnerů hledal „manžela či manželku své duše pryč a daleko od manželského lože“.
