Zoals ieder jaar brengt Harry Potter de zomervakantie door bij zijn vreselijke oom en tante, waar de sfeer dit jaar extra gespannen is doordat hun verwende zoontje Dirk op dieet is. Harry kan dan ook niet wachten tot hij terug mag naar Zweinsteins Hogeschool voor Hekserij en Hocus-Pocus, om aan zijn vierde jaar te beginnen. Ondertussen zijn er allerlei tekenen die erop wijzen dat Voldemort, met behulp van Duistere tovenaars weer aan kracht begint te winnen. De angst dat Hij Die Niet Genoemd Mag Worden opnieuw zal toeslaan wordt steeds groter...

Voordat Harry Potter aan zijn derde jaar op Zweinstein kan beginnen, moet hij de zomervakantie bij zijn gemene oom en tante doorbrengen. "Honderd jaar eenzaamheid" is een klassieker die steeds opnieuw de moeite waard is. Justina nemá daleko k bohyni. – Balthazar: 2. román, prorok. – Mountolive: 3. román nazvaný podle hlavní postavy. – Clea: 4. román posouvá příběh v čase. Celková kompozice tetralogie je navíc komplikována tím, že zatímco první, druhý a čtvrtý díl vypráví spisovatel Darley, který je účastníkem děje, třetí díl je vyprávěn ve třetí osobě a nejvíc se blíží objektivnímu vyprávění.
