The International Symposium on Smart Graphics 2007 took place from June 25–27 in Kyoto, Japan, marking the eighth event in a series that began in 2000 as a AAAI Spring Symposium. This year, the symposium aimed to engage the Asian Smart Graphics community, resulting in an increase in submissions and a lower acceptance rate of 31–36%, depending on the category. The core objective of these symposia is to unite researchers and practitioners from computer graphics, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, graphic design, and the fine arts. Each discipline plays a vital role in the concept of “smart graphics,” which involves the intelligent creation of effective, expressive, and aesthetic graphical presentations. While artists and designers have historically crafted communicative graphics, artificial intelligence seeks to automate this process through computational means. Computer graphics supplies the necessary tools for graphical creation, while cognitive sciences offer the rules and models of perception essential for effective design. The interaction among these fields fosters vibrant discussions, and the symposium thrives on a spirit of open-mindedness and a willingness to learn from and collaborate with one another.
