Set against the backdrop of World War I, the story follows twin sisters Peggy and Maude, who work in a book bindery in Oxford. While ambitious Peggy dreams of education and a life beyond binding books, her sister Maude finds contentment in their simple routine. The arrival of Belgian refugees disrupts their lives, prompting Peggy to explore new possibilities for herself. However, her burgeoning love for a Belgian soldier complicates her aspirations, as she grapples with the responsibilities that accompany their relationship amidst the upheaval of war.
