Kilmeny of the Orchard

Set on Prince Edward Island, the story follows Eric Marshall, a schoolteacher who discovers Kilmeny, a mute girl with extraordinary musical talent. Their deep bond blossoms into love, but Kilmeny fears her disability will burden Eric and rejects his proposal. When Eric's friend, a throat specialist, reveals that Kilmeny can only speak if driven by a strong emotional need, a life-threatening encounter with a jealous rival catalyzes her transformation. Ultimately, Kilmeny finds her voice, leading to a joyful union with Eric.
